OpenAI, Oracle (ORCL.N) and Vantage Data Centers have announced plans to build a major data center campus in Port Washington, Wisconsin, under the Stargate project — a $500 billion initiative aimed at strengthening U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The Wisconsin site, called Lighthouse, will be completed by 2028 and is expected to generate over 4,000 skilled construction jobs, most of them unionized. Once operational, the facility will support more than 1,000 permanent positions and thousands of additional indirect jobs. Backed by Vantage’s $15 billion investment, the campus will contribute to a network that delivers over 4.5 gigawatts of IT capacity through multiple Oracle partnerships.

The Stargate project — which also involves Japan’s SoftBank Group (9984.T) — recently broke ground on its first AI data center in Abilene, Texas. It forms a key part of President Donald Trump’s national AI initiative, launched at the White House in January, to ensure the United States remains competitive amid China’s rapid technological advances.

OpenAI, alongside its main backer Microsoft (MSFT.O), is one of several tech giants pouring billions into AI-focused data infrastructure to power platforms such as ChatGPT and Copilot, which require vast amounts of computing power.

Vantage, supported by Silver Lake and DigitalBridge (DBRG.N), will lead construction and operations for the Lighthouse site, marking a major milestone in America’s expanding AI supercomputing ecosystem.
