Alibaba has unveiled a new AI chatbot assistant integrated into its Quark app, signaling a renewed push into the consumer artificial intelligence market. The move represents a strategic shift for the Chinese tech giant, whose AI efforts have traditionally focused on enterprise clients through its cloud division.

The chatbot — free to use and accessible via text or voice — provides users with real-time answers, recommendations, and services powered by Alibaba’s latest large language model, Qwen3. The company described the new service as a key part of its strategy to reposition Quark, which began as a mobile browser, into Alibaba’s flagship AI-driven consumer platform featuring enhanced search and interactive capabilities.

Alibaba has struggled to establish a strong consumer presence in China’s highly competitive AI market, dominated by ByteDance, Tencent, and emerging players like DeepSeek. Its previous AI assistant, Tongyi, launched in late 2023 but has yet to gain major traction, reaching only 6.96 million monthly active users as of September. By comparison, ByteDance’s Doubao commands around 150 million active users, followed by DeepSeek with 73.4 million and Tencent’s AI tools with 64.2 million, according to data from Aicpb.com.

Globally, tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have already integrated AI assistants into mainstream products like Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT. Alibaba is now attempting to mirror that consumer momentum within China by combining conversational AI with its broader e-commerce and device ecosystem.

In a related announcement, Alibaba said pre-sales for its Quark AI Glasses will open Friday at midnight on its Tmall platform, priced at 4,699 yuan ($659). The smart glasses, revealed in July, are part of Alibaba’s expanding portfolio of wearable AI products designed to integrate seamlessly with its new chat ecosystem.
