On Friday, Microsoft rolled out the first build of Windows 11 26H1, and for most users, there’s nothing to worry about. The company released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28000 to the Canary Channel—the most experimental of the Windows Insider channels—updating the version under Settings > System > About and winver to Windows 11, version 26H1.

Microsoft emphasized that 26H1 isn’t a consumer-facing feature update. “26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon,” the blog post noted. The company added that 25H2 remains the main branch for new features, following the annual feature update cadence in the latter half of each year.

The release is aimed specifically at supporting new silicon, reportedly the Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite, expected to ship in early 2026. Microsoft used the earlier Snapdragon X Elite as a test platform, gradually expanding support for other Copilot+ processors such as Intel’s Core Ultra 200 and AMD’s Ryzen AI 300.

For Windows enthusiasts, the takeaway is simple: remain on Windows 11 25H2 to experience new features. Canary Channel builds are purely experimental and may include platform changes or concepts that never see a wider release. Microsoft warns that features in these builds may change, be removed, or be replaced based on feedback, with only select features eventually reaching general users.
