SanDisk appears to be giving its SSD lineup a fresh start, retiring its long-running Blue and Black branding in favor of a new naming scheme that leans heavily into a more futuristic identity. Going forward, the company’s SSDs will be sold under the Optimus family, with the former Blue series becoming Optimus, the Black 7xxx line rebranded as Optimus GX, and the Black 8xxx models renamed Optimus GX Pro.

Alongside the new names, SanDisk has overhauled the visual identity of its SSD packaging. The revised look introduces a new typeface and bold, high-contrast graphics that are clearly designed to stand out on retail shelves. While the Optimus branding may invite comparisons to pop culture robots, the overall aesthetic feels closer to sleek sci-fi visuals than anything overtly playful, signaling that SanDisk is aiming squarely at performance-focused PC users and enthusiasts.

Several existing SSDs are being reintroduced under the new branding without changes to their core hardware. The Blue SN5100 is now the Optimus SN5100, the Black SN7100 becomes the Optimus GX 7100, and the Black SN8100 is rebranded as the Optimus GX Pro 8100. SanDisk is retaining the numerical model identifiers to maintain continuity, though the traditional “SN” prefixes appear to be phased out as part of the rebrand.

In addition to the naming overhaul, SanDisk also announced a new compact SSD aimed at handhelds and small-form-factor devices. The Optimus GX 7100M is a 2230-sized version of the former SN7100, designed specifically for systems such as gaming handhelds and other portable hardware that rely on expandable storage. With handheld PCs continuing to grow in popularity, the smaller form factor positions SanDisk to compete more directly in this increasingly important segment.
