Amazon Web Services has expanded its partnership with German automotive hardware supplier Aumovio to support the commercial rollout of autonomous vehicles, starting with driverless trucks developed by Aurora, the companies said on Tuesday.
Under the expanded agreement, AWS will become Aumovio’s preferred cloud provider for autonomous driving development powered by artificial intelligence. The collaboration is expected to play a key role in Aurora’s plan to deploy self-driving trucks at scale from 2027, marking a shift from research toward commercial operations in autonomous freight. Shares of Aurora rose more than 8% following the announcement.
Automakers and technology firms have invested billions of dollars in AI systems underpinning self-driving technology, which has faced technical hurdles, safety concerns, and long development timelines. The AWS–Aumovio partnership reflects growing industry confidence that advances in AI can accelerate validation and deployment, particularly in logistics and trucking.
“The big accelerant in the industry has been the use of engineering AI, because it allows development and validation with significantly fewer resources,” said Ozgur Tohumcu, general manager for automotive and manufacturing at AWS, in comments to Reuters.
Using AWS cloud infrastructure, Aumovio engineers can process vast volumes of driving data with generative and agentic AI to identify rare but critical scenarios, such as road debris or pedestrians in traffic lanes. This approach helps speed up training and validation of autonomous systems that must perform reliably in highly unusual situations.
“When you validate a Level 4 system, you’re trying to prove it behaves correctly in extremely rare situations that are very hard to find in the real world,” said Jeremy McClain, head of systems and software at Aumovio’s autonomous mobility unit. “Without AI, finding those edge cases in massive data sets would be very difficult.”
Aumovio, which was spun off last year from German tire maker Continental, supplies the hardware platform for Aurora’s autonomous driving system. The company also provides a separate fallback system designed to safely bring a truck to a stop if the primary autonomous system fails.
Aurora has already launched limited driverless operations in the United States, and the partners said the expanded use of AI-driven cloud tools is intended to support a broader commercial rollout in the coming years.
