India has instructed global technology platforms such as YouTube, Meta, X and Netflix to operate within the country’s constitutional framework, signaling a tougher stance on digital content governance.

The directive comes shortly after New Delhi tightened its content moderation rules, requiring social media companies to remove unlawful material within three hours of notification. The previous compliance window was 36 hours.

Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of understanding local cultural and legal expectations, stating that multinational companies must align their operations with national values.

Authorities also highlighted the growing concern over deepfake content, calling for stronger safeguards and ongoing collaboration with industry leaders.

The announcement was made during the India AI Impact Summit, where global technology executives and political leaders gathered to discuss the future of artificial intelligence and digital responsibility.
