Louisiana utility regulators have declined a request to investigate a major data center agreement involving Meta, according to environmental law group Earthjustice.

The group had asked the Louisiana Public Service Commission to examine financing arrangements tied to a proposed $27 billion data center project in Richland Parish. The request focused on concerns that costs associated with supporting infrastructure, including three new gas-powered plants, could eventually be passed on to utility customers.

Earthjustice argued that a revised financial structure connected to the project might allow Meta to exit the initiative earlier than originally planned without fully guaranteeing long-term commitments. In such a scenario, construction expenses related to the power facilities could remain unrecovered, potentially affecting future electricity rates for households and businesses.

The commission’s decision to deny the request has raised questions about oversight of large-scale technology investments linked to energy infrastructure. Critics contend that similar arrangements could shift financial risk toward the public if projects change or are discontinued.

Regulatory officials have not yet issued a detailed public response regarding the dismissal of the motion.
