For those who keep a multitude of tabs open in Chrome, you may have noticed a drop in your PC’s performance over time, especially if you’re multitasking beyond just reading articles.

Luckily, the latest beta version of Chrome introduces a new feature that alerts you when a specific tab is using an excessive amount of resources. You can then choose to close the tab if necessary to improve performance.

To try out this feature, you’ll need to download the latest Chrome Canary version from Google’s website. Once installed, open Chrome Canary and enter chrome://flags in the address bar, then press Enter. This will take you to a menu where you can tweak various hidden settings.

To activate the performance warning feature, find and enable these two flags:

  • #performance-intervention-ui
  • #performance-intervention-demo-mode

After enabling these flags, restart Chrome Canary. Next, open the browser again and type chrome://settings/performance into the address bar, and press Enter. Here, you can select the option for Performance Issue Alerts, as detailed by Windows Latest.
