Motorola is shaking up its budget-friendly Moto G smartphone lineup with notable price cuts and spec enhancements. The latest addition, the Moto G 5G, unveiled recently, kicks off at an enticing $200 price point, boasting a higher-refresh-rate display compared to its predecessor. Accompanying it is the refreshed Moto G Power 5G, maintaining last year’s $300 price tag while receiving its own share of spec improvements.
These releases follow last month’s unveiling of the Moto G Play for 2024, which also saw a price reduction from $170 in 2023 to a more accessible $150 for this year’s model.
The Moto G 5G sports a new 6.6-inch display with an impressive 120Hz refresh rate, complemented by Dolby Atmos audio support. Equipped with a 50-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, it runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 chip. While not the latest offering from Qualcomm in this price bracket, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 is expected to deliver optimized performance for photography and the device’s display. However, the inclusion of a 2-megapixel macro camera alongside the main lens raises doubts about its practical utility for photographers. The device also offers 128GB of storage, a substantial 5,000-mAh battery, and 18-watt fast charging capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Moto G Power 5G boasts a larger 6.7-inch display with a matching 120Hz refresh rate, along with 128GB of storage, Dolby Atmos audio, and a generous 5,000-mAh battery. The camera setup sees an upgrade, featuring a 50-megapixel main camera paired with an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens for enhanced photography versatility. Powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 7020 processor, it also introduces 15-watt wireless charging, a novel addition for phones in this price range.
Both devices introduce a “RAM boost” feature, allowing users to expand onboard memory by utilizing built-in storage. While Motorola’s software update policy remains unchanged, offering one year of software updates and three years of security updates, the inclusion of NFC for contactless payments marks a notable addition for phones in the $200 range.
The Moto G 5G is set to debut on T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile on March 21, with an unlocked variant scheduled for release on May 2. Available in a sage green color, the Moto G Power 5G will initially launch on Cricket on March 22, followed by additional carriers, and an unlocked model will hit the market on March 29.
