OpenAI and Sur Energy are joining forces on an ambitious $25 billion data center project in Argentina, according to government officials. The facility, expected to reach up to 500 megawatts of capacity, will support large-scale artificial intelligence operations, including ChatGPT and other OpenAI technologies.
The initiative, called “Stargate Argentina,” will be developed under Argentina’s RIGI tax framework, which aims to boost foreign investment in strategic infrastructure. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the project as a milestone for both the company and the region, calling Latin America “a hub of talent and creativity.”
OpenAI, valued at around $500 billion after a recent secondary share sale, is rapidly expanding its global infrastructure footprint. The Argentina project marks its first major venture in Latin America and could position the country as a regional hub for AI and energy innovation.
