Nigeria’s data protection authority has launched an investigation into Chinese-owned e-commerce platform Temu over suspected violations of local data privacy laws.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission said concerns about Temu’s data-processing practices triggered the probe, including issues related to online surveillance, unclear data handling, cross-border transfers, and possible breaches of data-minimisation rules.

NDPC chief Vincent Olatunji ordered the investigation and warned that companies found non-compliant could face legal consequences.

Temu currently processes the personal data of approximately 12.7 million users in Nigeria and serves around 70 million daily users worldwide.

Owned by Nasdaq-listed PDD Holdings, Temu has expanded rapidly in Nigeria through its app-based marketplace offering heavily discounted products across fashion, electronics, and home goods.

The company has not yet responded publicly to the investigation.
