OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Python toolmaker Astral as it intensifies competition in the artificial intelligence coding tools market.
The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, will integrate Astral’s developer tools into OpenAI’s Codex platform. The move is aimed at strengthening OpenAI’s position against rivals such as Anthropic, whose coding assistant has gained traction among developers.
Codex has seen rapid growth, surpassing 2 million weekly active users, with usage rising significantly since the start of the year. By incorporating Astral’s tools, OpenAI aims to improve performance, reliability and developer experience within its ecosystem.
Astral is known within the Python community for building tools that enhance development speed and efficiency. The company confirmed that its open-source projects will continue to be supported after the acquisition.
The transaction highlights increasing competition in AI-powered software development, where companies are racing to capture developer adoption and enterprise demand.
