DuckDuckGo Browser Now Blocks Most YouTube Ads by Default
DuckDuckGo is taking a more aggressive stance against online advertising by introducing built-in YouTube ad blocking in its browser. The feature is enabled by default on desktop and iPhone, allowing users to watch most YouTube videos without installing additional extensions or changing browser settings.
Android support is also on the way, with the feature already available as an optional setting for current users.
Built-In YouTube Ad Blocking
Unlike traditional browsers that require third-party extensions, DuckDuckGo now includes YouTube ad blocking as a native feature.
The company says the browser blocks most video advertisements, including those shown before and during YouTube videos. The system is powered by the same open-source filter lists used by uBlock Origin, one of the web’s most popular ad blockers.
Because the functionality is integrated directly into the browser, users don’t need to install or manage separate extensions.
Doubling Down on Privacy
DuckDuckGo has long positioned itself as a privacy-focused alternative to Google’s ecosystem, offering search results without user tracking or targeted advertising.
The browser already includes several built-in privacy features, such as:
- Tracker blocking
- Cookie protection
- Enhanced privacy controls
- Integrated ad blocking
By adding YouTube ad blocking out of the box, DuckDuckGo is expanding that privacy-first approach while differentiating itself further from browsers like Google Chrome.
A Direct Challenge to Google
Blocking YouTube ads is a bold move given that advertising remains one of Google’s primary sources of revenue.
Google has historically fought against ad blockers on YouTube by introducing technical changes that detect or limit their effectiveness. In some cases, users have encountered warning messages or reduced functionality when YouTube detects ad-blocking software.
Since DuckDuckGo is now openly promoting YouTube ad blocking as a core browser feature, it could invite further countermeasures from Google in future updates.
Growing Appeal Beyond Search
DuckDuckGo is also capitalizing on growing user frustration with AI-generated features becoming increasingly common across search engines and browsers.
While the company offers optional AI tools of its own, it continues to market itself as a more privacy-conscious alternative to Google’s ecosystem. DuckDuckGo recently reported its highest-ever single-day search traffic, suggesting increased interest from users seeking alternatives to mainstream search and browsing experiences.
Available Now
The updated DuckDuckGo browser is available now for Windows, macOS, and iPhone, with YouTube ad blocking enabled by default.
Android users can already enable the feature manually, while a broader rollout is expected in an upcoming browser update.
