Microsoft Reminds Users to Replace Microsoft Store Versions of Office Before Support Ends

Microsoft is once again warning users who installed Microsoft 365 apps through the Microsoft Store that support for those versions is coming to an end. The company has updated its support documentation to remind customers that security updates will stop in December 2026, meaning users should migrate to the Click-to-Run version of Office before then.

Anyone still using the Microsoft Store editions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft 365 apps is encouraged to switch as soon as possible.

Support Ends in December 2026

Microsoft has outlined the following timeline for Microsoft Store installations of Microsoft 365 Apps:

  • October 2025: New feature updates ended.
  • December 2026: Security updates will end completely.

After December 2026, Store-installed Office apps will continue to function, but they will no longer receive security patches or new features, leaving users exposed to future vulnerabilities.

What Is Click-to-Run?

Microsoft recommends migrating to the Click-to-Run (C2R) version of Microsoft 365.

Unlike traditional installers that must fully install an application before it can be used, Click-to-Run streams Office components to your PC, allowing you to begin using applications while the remaining files continue downloading in the background.

The technology also provides a smoother update experience by installing updates automatically without requiring users to manually download patches.

Benefits of Click-to-Run

Microsoft says the Click-to-Run version offers several advantages over Microsoft Store installations, including:

  • Continued feature updates
  • Ongoing security patches
  • Faster installation through streaming
  • Automatic background updates
  • Reduced interruptions during updates

Because updates are handled automatically, users are less likely to miss important security fixes.

How to Switch

The easiest migration method is Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool (ODT).

This command-line utility allows users and IT administrators to download and install the Click-to-Run version of Microsoft 365 Apps, replacing the Microsoft Store installation while preserving access to supported updates.

Organizations can also use the Office Deployment Tool to customize installations and deploy Office across multiple devices.

Don’t Wait Until the Deadline

Although support doesn’t officially end until December 2026, Microsoft recommends migrating sooner rather than later.

Switching early ensures you’ll continue receiving new Microsoft 365 features, bug fixes, and critical security updates without interruption, avoiding the risks associated with running unsupported Office software after the deadline.
