Windows 11 July 2026 Update Brings New Recovery Tool and Major Quality Improvements
Microsoft’s latest Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 delivers more than just critical security fixes. Alongside July’s record-breaking security patches, update KB5101650 introduces a range of new features that were previously available only as optional previews or Windows Insider builds.
Among the highlights is Point-in-Time Restore (PITR), a new recovery system designed to make it easier to undo recent system changes.
Point-in-Time Restore Arrives for Windows 11
The biggest addition in the July update is Point-in-Time Restore (PITR).
Unlike the traditional System Restore feature, PITR creates a full system backup and automatically generates recovery snapshots every 4 to 24 hours. Users can restore their PC to any available snapshot if something goes wrong after installing software, changing settings, or updating Windows.
The snapshots are retained for up to 72 hours, making the feature ideal for short-term recovery rather than long-term backups.
Another key advantage is that PITR can restore local applications and personal files, offering broader protection than the legacy System Restore tool.
Windows Updates Can Now Be Paused More Easily
Microsoft has also improved update management.
Users can now schedule Windows Update pauses for up to 35 days directly through a calendar interface, making it simpler to delay updates during travel or busy work periods.
Despite introducing the feature, Microsoft continues to recommend installing updates promptly, citing the increasing speed at which attackers can exploit newly disclosed vulnerabilities with the help of AI.
Widgets and Taskbar Receive Usability Improvements
The update includes several interface refinements aimed at reducing distractions.
Notable changes include:
- Widgets no longer opening automatically when the mouse pointer hovers over them.
- The taskbar displaying notifications and icons in a more compact, minimized layout.
These adjustments help create a cleaner desktop experience while reducing accidental interactions.
Performance and Accessibility Enhancements
Microsoft has also delivered numerous quality-of-life improvements throughout Windows 11.
The update brings:
- Faster File Explorer startup times.
- Quicker mounting of virtual disk images.
- Improved Bluetooth reliability.
- Enhancements to screen tinting features for reduced eye strain.
- Better support for internet printing.
- Improvements to Voice Access and voice typing.
Together, these changes focus on improving performance, accessibility, and everyday usability across the operating system.
Gradual Rollout of New Features
While the July security updates are available immediately for supported systems, Microsoft is deploying the new features in stages.
As a result, users may not see every new capability immediately after installing KB5101650. Features such as Point-in-Time Restore and some interface improvements will gradually become available on compatible Windows 11 devices over the coming weeks.
The phased rollout allows Microsoft to monitor compatibility and resolve any issues before the features reach all users.
