Firefox Says uBlock Origin Support Isn’t Going Anywhere

Firefox has confirmed that it will continue supporting uBlock Origin, offering a major advantage for users who rely on the popular ad blocker as Microsoft Edge prepares to phase out extensions built on the older Manifest V2 architecture.

Firefox Keeps uBlock Origin Support

Mozilla recently stated on Bluesky that “Our support for uBlock Origin isn’t going anywhere.” The announcement comes as Microsoft prepares to move Edge toward Manifest V3, which will prevent uBlock Origin and other Manifest V2-based extensions from accessing some of the browser functions they need for advanced ad blocking.

This could affect the extension’s ability to identify and block ads effectively, including advertisements displayed during video playback.

Chromium Browsers Are Moving to Manifest V3

Microsoft’s decision follows Google’s transition from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3 in Chrome and Chromium. Since Edge is built on Chromium, Microsoft is following the same general path.

Chromium also powers browsers such as Opera, Brave, Vivaldi and Samsung Browser, meaning users of those browsers may face similar limitations with traditional Manifest V2 ad blockers.

Firefox is different because it uses its own browser engine rather than Chromium. That makes it one of the few major browsers capable of continuing full support for uBlock Origin.

Firefox May Become the Best Option for uBlock Origin Users

Among major non-Chromium browsers, Firefox now stands out for users who specifically want the full version of uBlock Origin. Safari and DuckDuckGo do not support the extension, leaving Firefox as the most straightforward option for users who don’t want to compromise on ad-blocking capabilities.

Users of other browsers may have to switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which offers fewer features and less comprehensive blocking, or rely on their browser’s built-in ad-blocking tools.

For dedicated uBlock Origin users, Firefox is increasingly becoming the major browser option that allows them to keep the extension’s full capabilities without compromise.
