A laptop that lasts less time between charges may have an aging battery, a more demanding workload, or a combination of both. The battery percentage in the taskbar does not explain which factor dominates.

Windows can generate a battery report containing information about usage and estimated capacity. Used carefully, that report helps separate changes in the battery from changes in how the computer is being used.

The most useful approach combines the report with a repeatable observation of everyday work.

Generate the report

Microsoft documents the powercfg /batteryreport command for Windows 11. Its instructions use an administrator Command Prompt, after which Windows saves an HTML report that can be opened in a browser. Microsoft highlights sections such as Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage.

Run the command and note the location reported by Windows. Keep a dated copy if you intend to compare results later.

Before interpreting the data, confirm that you are looking at the correct battery and the relevant usage period. A report is more useful when connected to a specific question, such as whether capacity has declined over several months or whether an unusually short session followed a demanding workload.

Compare capacity figures carefully

Microsoft’s Surface guidance describes comparing full charge capacity with design capacity. Dividing the former by the latter gives an estimated proportion of remaining capacity.

For an illustrative example, a reported full charge capacity of 42,000 mWh against a design capacity of 56,000 mWh gives a ratio of 75%.

That calculation describes the relationship between two reported capacity figures. It does not mean the battery is currently charged to 75%, and it does not promise that every workload will run for exactly three-quarters of its original duration.

Keep those concepts separate when discussing the result with a repair provider or comparing reports.

Compare like-for-like sessions

A useful personal test might involve the same document work, similar screen brightness, and the same connected accessories on two different days.

Record the start and end charge, approximate duration, and any unusual activity. A video conference, a large application update, or sustained processing can make one session very different from another.

The aim is not to create a laboratory benchmark. It is to avoid drawing a hardware conclusion from unrelated workloads.

If the capacity figures remain broadly similar while runtime changes sharply, review what changed during use before assuming the battery alone explains the difference.

Recognize intentional charging limits

Microsoft explains that some manufacturers provide Smart charging to reduce the time a battery remains fully charged. When active, this behavior can prevent the battery from reaching 100% during ordinary plugged-in use.

A charging limit therefore needs to be understood in the context of the device’s supported features. Check the manufacturer’s controls before treating a stable limit as a fault.

For someone who mostly works at a desk, a capacity-preserving charging policy may fit the routine. Before a day away from power, review the manufacturer’s documented way to prepare for the needed charge.

Use the report as evidence, not a verdict. Capacity history, comparable sessions, and charging settings together provide a much clearer explanation than a single battery percentage.
