Google is overhauling its Maps app with Gemini AI, bringing conversational capabilities that will let users interact with the navigation tool more naturally. The redesign, announced Wednesday, turns Google Maps into a chat-style assistant that can provide directions, nearby recommendations, and context-aware travel advice through voice commands.
The new AI-powered system will describe landmarks to help drivers identify turns and destinations, reducing confusion during navigation. Drawing on a database of over 250 million reviewed locations, Gemini will make Google Maps smarter, more personal, and more human-like in its interactions.
Google said the updated Maps app will include safety features to prevent AI errors, commonly known as “hallucinations,” that could mislead drivers. The experience will be fully hands-free and available on both Android and iPhone devices.
With over 2 billion users worldwide, the update gives Google a massive audience to showcase Gemini’s real-world performance as it competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company hopes that embedding its AI into everyday apps will cement its role as a leader in the rapidly evolving field of conversational artificial intelligence.
