Eve Systems Expands to Android with New App, but It’s a Limited Start
After years of exclusivity to Apple’s ecosystem, Eve Systems has taken its first significant step toward embracing Android users by releasing a dedicated Android app. This move marks a long-awaited change for the smart home manufacturer, which has historically limited its products to Apple HomeKit. The app, which has been in development for over two years, is designed to bring Android users closer to the feature-rich control enjoyed by iOS users. However, there’s a notable limitation: the new Eve for Android app currently supports only one device, the Eve Thermo, a smart radiator valve available exclusively in Europe.
While this release may seem modest, it reflects Eve’s strategic approach to roll out the app in time for the winter months when radiator control becomes essential. Eve CEO Jerome Gackel has acknowledged these limitations and expressed the company’s intent to expand the app’s functionality to include more devices and ecosystems in future updates. For now, the app integrates solely with Google Home, leaving popular platforms like Alexa and Samsung SmartThings out of the equation.
Android users have been able to interact with Eve devices through the Google Home app since the introduction of Matter, the smart home interoperability standard, in 2023. However, the Google Home app only provides basic control through the Matter protocol. In contrast, the Eve app unlocks advanced features such as on-device automations that operate independently of cloud services, offering a more robust and flexible smart home experience.
Eve Systems is known for its innovative smart home products, including the Eve Door and Window contact sensor, the Eve Weather smart weather station, and the Eve Energy smart plug. Despite these advanced offerings, the brand’s previous Apple HomeKit exclusivity left Android users without a viable entry point. With the release of the Android app and the growing adoption of Matter-supported devices like the Eve Motion and Eve Energy, Eve Systems is slowly building a more inclusive smart home ecosystem.
