Google has entered into a pioneering agreement to buy electricity from a carbon capture-equipped gas power plant in Decatur, Illinois — the first U.S. corporate deal of its kind. Developed by Low Carbon Infrastructure, the 400-megawatt Broadwing project will supply power to Google’s data centers across the Midwest while trapping and storing up to 90% of its CO₂ emissions underground.

The plant, located on Archer Daniels Midland’s industrial site, is expected to reach final investment decision in 2026 and begin producing power in the early 2030s. Construction will generate hundreds of jobs, with carbon to be stored permanently in deep geological formations.

Michael Terrell, Google’s head of Advanced Energy, said the initiative fills a crucial gap in the company’s clean energy strategy, complementing recent investments in nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower. The partnership highlights Google’s effort to balance the energy-intensive demands of artificial intelligence with its decarbonization goals.
