Demystifying iOS 17.3: Understanding Stolen Device Protection

Apple rolled out iOS 17.3 on January 22, delivering a slew of bug fixes and some exciting new features, including the highly anticipated collaborative playlist function in Apple Music, to iPhones worldwide. Among these updates is the introduction of a significant security enhancement known as Stolen Device Protection, designed to safeguard your data in the event of your iPhone falling into the wrong hands.

Stolen Device Protection offers an additional layer of security to protect your accounts and personal information in case of theft. While it’s an optional feature, Apple strongly recommends its activation for all users.

Here’s how you can enable Stolen Device Protection and what you need to know about this new security measure:

To activate Stolen Device Protection:

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
3. Scroll down to locate Stolen Device Protection.

If the feature is already enabled, it will indicate “On” next to Stolen Device Protection. If it’s switched off, simply tap “Turn On Protection” directly below it.

Here’s what you should be aware of regarding Stolen Device Protection: Stolen Device Protection requires biometric authentication to access certain sensitive settings and information when you’re not in a familiar location, such as your home. Certain actions, like accessing passwords or payment methods, turning off Lost Mode, or erasing your device’s content, will prompt biometric authentication. A new mechanism called Security Delay is implemented for changing critical settings. If attempted in an unfamiliar location, biometric authentication will be required twice: initially and then again after an hour. Protected actions include turning off Stolen Device Protection, changing your Apple ID password, updating security settings, and more. While Stolen Device Protection adds an extra layer of security, it doesn’t cover all aspects of your device. For instance, your iPhone passcode can still be used for Apple Pay transactions. Although optional, Apple strongly advises users to activate Stolen Device Protection for enhanced device security.

How to enable Security Delay near home: To ensure Security Delay remains active even in familiar locations like your favorite coffee shop or apartment complex, follow these steps:

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Privacy & Security.
3. Navigate to Location Services.
4. Select System Services.
5. Toggle the switch next to Significant Locations.

With Stolen Device Protection enabled, your iPhone will enforce a Security Delay for certain actions, even when in familiar locations, providing an added layer of protection for your device and data.
